Do Martial Arts Classes Run on Public Holidays and School Holidays in Canberra?

If you're a Canberra parent, one question comes up every long weekend and every school holiday: are classes still on? Here's the straight answer, plus how to make up a session if your child ever misses one.

Why we don't run classes on public holidays

For 15+ years we've kept the same policy: no classes on public holidays. The ACT Government sets the public holiday dates – Reconciliation Day, the King's Birthday, and the rest – and our decision to close on them is long-standing company policy.

The reason is simple. Everyone deserves the day off, our coaches included – the same as any Monday-to-Friday worker. We're always open as normal on the Saturday of a long weekend, so you rarely lose much mat time.

If you ever want to raise something about the holidays or the policy, send it through to the members@ inbox rather than to the coaches on the floor. That's the inbox that gets actioned, and it keeps the team free to do what they're there for – running great classes for your kids.

What "year-round" actually means here

We're not a term-by-term program. We run 47 weeks a year for kids and 50 for adults, across two locations, for 240+ kids. That consistency is the whole point – progress in martial arts comes from turning up regularly, not from cramming a term and then stopping for weeks.

We run 47 weeks a year for kids and 50 for adults – we're not a term-by-term program.

Keeping that running is a mammoth task, and it's one we're proud of. You can see exactly what's on and when on our timetable.

Missed a Monday? Here's how make-up classes work

Public holidays almost always land on a Monday, so if your child's regular session is a Monday, you've got plenty of make-up options. Saturday mornings are the easiest swap:

  • Tiny Tigers – our youngest students
  • Tigers – primary-aged kids
  • Taekwondo

There are more make-up class times across both locations over the coming months too. If you're not sure which class suits your child's level, have a look at the kids programs or just ask – we'll point you to the right session.

School holidays: training doesn't stop

During school holidays, kids train unlimited – come to as many classes as you like. We're also open during the first week of the July school holidays at both clubs. School holidays are one of the best times to build momentum, while the normal week's routine is on pause and there's a bit more time in the day.

Thursday 11 June: school-strike Day Camp

One dated thing for the diary. ACT public schools are confirmed closed on Thursday 11 June. If you need care that day, we're running a Day Camp from 8am to 4:30pm.

It's $60 for the day, including morning and afternoon tea and all the activities. No payment is required until the day – just register your interest so we can hold a spot.

Got a question about the schedule?

If you're new to the club and weighing things up, the easiest first step is to come and try a class and see how the week runs for yourself. Send any questions through and we'll go through them with you.

See you on the mats soon.
